Holy Bull 2023
The Kentucky Derby point and prep races continue Saturday with The Holy Bull at Gulfstream Park. A field of 8 three-year olds will try and earn their way onto The Kentucky Derby trail and gets some points for the Run for the Roses on the first Saturday in May.
I don’t think the Derby winner is in this field. That said, let’s look at what we’ve got and see what shakes out.
Lord Miles breaks from the rail and gets blinkers. He also gets Irad for Zayas. All positives in my book. This colt was finishing as good or better than anyone in the Mucho Macho Man and I think the trip and the extra ground over two turns as opposed to one favor him even more. I land here as the top choice.
West Coast Cowboy gets a little more ground and moves up in class. He is lightly raced and can improve but I don’t think he is the caliber of some of the others in here.
Shadow Dragon makes his three-year old debut and first start in open company. He will have to prove it to me.
Cyclone Mischief is the morning line favorite qt 2-1 off a big allowance win at this track. He has the perfect running style but can regress off the big race and noted is that was on Lasix which he comes off for this. I’ll bet against him.
Mr. Bob had trouble in the Mucho Macho Man and adds blinkers and Joel for Irad. I can see him running a good race, but I do not like him for the win.
Legacy Isle has yet to be beat and handled a few of these in the Mucho Macho Man. He went gate to wire that day and will likely try the same. He gets Saez for Jaramillo who rode him in all his wins. He is game and likely shows up again, but I think they get him this time.
Il Miracolo looks a cut below most in here. I’ll pass.
Rocket Can is the other I strongly considered. This colt improved when stretched out and is making his three-year old debut, so I expect him to go forward here. He looks like he gets a perfect trip under Alvarado and he is a major contender in my book.
