Ayr Racecourse

Ayr Racecourse is a horse-racing track in Ayr, Scotland, United Kingdom. It opened in 1907, at Whitletts Rd.

History of Ayr Racecourse

1576 – Horse racing in Ayr can be traced to this year.

1771 – Ayr held its first properly organized race meeting. The meeting lasted two days.

1804 – The first Ayr Gold Cup was run.

1824 – The Western Meeting Club was formed, and the Western Meeting—now associated with the Ayr Gold Cup Festival—was established.

1838 – The Western Meeting offered £2,000 in prize money. Its race for two-year-olds was the most valuable race of the British season that year.

1855 – The Ayr Gold Cup became a handicap.

1888–1889 – Ayrshire, a colt named for the Duke of Portland’s Scottish connections, won the Guineas and Derby in 1888 and the Eclipse Stakes in 1889.

1907 – Ayr Racecourse moved from the Seafield area to its present site in Craigie. The previous racecourse was a one-mile oval with sharp turns and insufficient space to expand the paddock.

The new site covered 150 acres drawn from R.A. Oswald’s Auchincruive Estate and J.A. Campbell’s Craigie Estate. The former Seafield course remains in use as playing fields and as part of Seafield Golf Course.

1950 – A jumps course was established, allowing Ayr to stage racing throughout the year.

1966 – The Scottish Grand National moved to Ayr following the closure of Bogside Racecourse in Irvine in 1965.

Late 1990s – The racecourse required substantial investment, leading to a search for new ownership.

2002 – A formal bidding process attracted more than 41 offers for the racecourse.

2003 – Richard Johnstone and Alan Macdonald were announced as the successful bidders in May.

2005 – South Ayrshire Council approved a £35 million master plan in February. The Scottish Executive subsequently called in the proposal, and a public inquiry was held in November and December.

Western House, formerly the headquarters and meeting place of the Western Meeting Club, was converted into a four-star hotel during the year. Ayr Racecourse states that the project cost more than £4 million.

2006 – The Scottish Executive granted outline planning permission for the master plan in May.

By November, improvements to the Princess Royal Stand had included two new bars, the Roman Warrior and Chancellor restaurants and upgraded hospitality boxes.

Construction of a new £100,000 paddock began in November. The project moved the Parade Ring closer to the course, enlarged the Winners’ Enclosure, added a rubberized walking surface and expanded the Champagne Gardens.

2007 – The new paddock was first used on February 10. Western House Hotel was also named Scottish Wedding Hotel of the Year.

2008 – The £4.5 million Ayrshire Suite opened in April as part of the Princess Royal Exhibition, Banqueting and Conference Centre. Western House Hotel was named Scottish Wedding Hotel of the Year for the second consecutive year.

2023 – Ayr Racecourse was named Sports Venue of the Year at the Scottish Hospitality Awards.

2026 – Western House Hotel was named Scotland’s Best Wedding Venue and Scotland’s Best Afternoon Tea at the Prestige Hotel Awards.

  • Race type: Thoroughbred Flat racing.
  • Surface: Turf
  • Direction and shape: The Flat course is a left-handed, galloping oval measuring approximately one and a half miles, or 12 furlongs, around.
  • Straight course: Ayr has a six-furlong straight course. Five- and six-furlong races use the straight, while longer races incorporate the round course.
  • Run-in: The Flat run-in is approximately four furlongs.
  • Terrain: The turn approaching the home straight is slightly downhill. The straight itself is wide.
  • Original design: The course opened at its present site in 1907 and was based on Newbury Racecourse. Ayr’s straight measures six furlongs, compared with Newbury’s one-mile straight.
  • Soil and climate: Ayr is close to Scotland’s west coast and has sandy soil beneath its racing surface. The racecourse states that the sandy soil and moderate coastal climate help it maintain the turf.
  • Best-suited running style: The long run-in tests a horse’s ability to sustain its gallop. Strong gallopers and horses capable of maintaining their finishing effort are suited to the course configuration.
  • Effect of going: The course becomes materially more demanding on heavy ground. Bettors should check the latest going, rainfall and rail movements close to race time.
  • Historical pace evidence: An analysis of handicaps with at least eight runners from 2009 through 2019 found that front-running and prominently positioned horses produced the strongest pace results over five and six furlongs. Front-runners also recorded the strongest figures over seven furlongs, while the same advantage was not present over one mile.
  • Historical draw evidence: In the same sample, high stalls underperformed over five furlongs, while lower stalls held a smaller overall advantage over six furlongs. Seven-furlong results were generally balanced, although high stalls performed less successfully in fields of at least 12 runners and on soft or heavy ground. No clear draw advantage emerged over one mile.
  • Large sprint fields: Historical Ayr Gold Cup, Silver Cup and Bronze Cup results show that one part of the straight can occasionally perform better than another. The favored section has varied, so the results do not establish a permanent stands’-side, center or far-side bias.

National Hunt Course

  • Race type: Thoroughbred National Hunt racing, including hurdle races and steeplechases.
  • Surface: Turf
  • Direction and shape: The National Hunt course is a left-handed circuit measuring approximately one and a half miles.
  • Course configurations: Ayr maintains separate hurdle and steeplechase layouts.
  • Steeplechase layout: The circuit contains nine fences and has well-graduated turns.
  • Terrain: Horses face a steady downhill section approaching the home turn, followed by a gentle rise toward the finish.
  • Run-in: The steeplechase run-in is approximately 210 yards.
  • Soil and climate: The course shares Ayr’s sandy soil and west-coast setting, which the racecourse identifies as factors in maintaining its racing surface throughout the year.
  • Best-suited running style: The galloping circuit and rising finish place an emphasis on stamina and the ability to sustain an effort after turning for home. These qualities become particularly important on soft ground.
  • Going information: Ayr’s official going page provides the latest going description, weather and rainfall information and rail movements. GoingStick readings are included when recorded. Conditions should be checked close to race time.
