Caliente Greyhound Track

Caliente Greyhound Track is a Racino (greyhound racing track and casino) in Baja, California, Mexico. It opened in 1928, at Blvd. Agua Caliente.

History of Caliente Greyhound Track

1928 – The Caliente Hipódromo, formerly the Agua Caliente Racetrack and the Agua Caliente Casino and Resort, opened in June. It is a resort and casino with a greyhound racing and former horse racing track in Tijuana, Baja, California, Mexico. The racetrack and its ancillary buildings were part of a larger recreational complex, the Agua Caliente Casino and Hotel, which opened in June 1928.

1929 – The racetrack opened in December 1929, known for its fine grandstand, where spectators watched horse and greyhound racing. Though governed by local authorities, Caliente is considered part of the United States racing circuit.

1932 – Jockey Eddie Arcaro rode his first winner at Caliente in 1932.

1935 – President Lázaro Cárdenas outlawed gambling and closed the resort and casino in 1935. However, Agua Caliente Racetrack continued to operate horse and greyhound racing. It was the site of several industry firsts, including starting gates, safety helmets, and “pick six” wagering. Phar Lap and Seabiscuit ran and won the Agua Caliente Handicap, the richest in North America during that time. The racetrack is the originator of the Pick 6 (on the North American continent), then known as the 5-10 and later the 4-9’er, while some called it the Big Six.

1939 – Anna Lee Aldred received her professional license from the Agua Caliente Racetrack, the first U.S. woman to receive a jockey’s license.

1971 – The original grandstand structure was devastated by fire.

1992 – The racetrack ceased hosting horse racing and started to host greyhound races only.

2007 It established Estadio Caliente sports and concert stadium after its renovations.

2015 – The dog racing circuit was one of 20 tracks in seven U.S. states, and Tijuana – the lowest-ranked track on the circuit and the only location in Mexico. At the time, it had 375 dogs, down from 1,000 at its zenith.

2017 – The stadium already has 27,000 seats.

2010’s – The resort was refurbished.

2019 – There were 4,683 races held at the track.
