Clairefontaine Racecourse

Clairefontaine Racecourse is a horse-racing track in Tourgéville, France. 
It opened in 1928, at Chem. de l’Hippodrome.
History of Clairefontaine Racecourse
  • 1875 — The Société des Courses de Pont-l’Évêque was established to organize obstacle racing at the Croix-Brisée racecourse in Pont-l’Évêque, a town in Normandy’s Pays d’Auge region.
  • 1924 — The Société des Courses du Pays d’Auge assumed the activities of the Société des Courses de Pont-l’Évêque. The City of Deauville also acquired land at Clairefontaine in Tourgéville for the development of a new racecourse.
  • 1928 — Clairefontaine Racecourse was officially inaugurated on August 8 by France’s Minister of Agriculture, with Flat racing forming its original program.
  • 1932 — Harness-racing meetings were introduced at Clairefontaine.
  • 1936 — The Société des Courses du Pays d’Auge acquired additional land in Tourgéville and created two larger courses, one for Flat racing and one for steeplechasing.
  • 1939–1949 — The racecourse was requisitioned during the Second World War. Racing resumed in 1949 with 14 meetings, six of which were conducted with PMU betting.
  • 1958 — Obstacle racing returned to a central place in the program, including the racecourse’s principal steeplechase. Three July meetings were also allocated to harness racing at that time.
  • 1999 — Clairefontaine staged its first race selected for France’s Quinté pool.
  • 2006 — The racecourse held its first illuminated evening meeting using large lighting balloons.
  • 2008 — Clairefontaine staged its first PMU harness meeting on grass.
  • 2012 — Clairefontaine became a host venue for a round of the Défi du Galop Flat-racing series.
  • 2014 — Clairefontaine became the first French racecourse staging three racing codes on grass to receive the EquuRES label.
  • 2016 — The racecourse received the Normandie Qualité Tourisme designation, and the restored marshland within the course complex was officially inaugurated.
  • 2020 — Selected races normally held at ParisLongchamp were transferred to Clairefontaine while Paris was under COVID-19 restrictions.
  • 2021 — Clairefontaine renewed its EquuRES Excellence certification under the program’s revised standards.
  • 2024 — Clairefontaine became the first racecourse to receive the EquuRES Bien-Être au Travail designation for workplace-welfare practices.

General Details

  • Clairefontaine is a right-handed grass venue accommodating Flat racing, hurdle racing, steeplechasing, and harness racing.
  • Its official course materials distinguish the Flat course from the National Hunt course, with the latter containing separate hurdle and steeplechase routes.
  • France Galop classifies Clairefontaine as Category 1N and a Pôle National for both Flat and obstacle racing.

Flat Course

  • Racing type: The course is used for Thoroughbred Flat racing.
  • Surface: The racing surface is grass.
  • Direction: Races are conducted right-handed.
  • Course configurations: Flat races use published configurations of approximately 1,400, 1,600, 1,800, 2,200, 2,400, 2,900, and 3,400 meters.
  • Starting positions: The official course plan marks seven starting areas, with one associated with each published configuration.

Harness Course

  • Clairefontaine has a separate right-handed grass course for driven and mounted harness racing.
  • LeTROT lists the homologated harness circuit at approximately 1,350 meters.
  • Recent race programs have included harness races over 2,200 and 2,900 meters.

National Hunt Course

  • Racing types: The course accommodates hurdle and steeplechase racing.
  • Surface: The racing surface is grass.
  • Direction: Races are conducted right-handed.
  • Classification: France Galop classifies Clairefontaine as Category 1N and a Pôle National for obstacle racing.

  • 3,400-meter route: The course contains 12 obstacles.
  • 3,600-meter route: The course contains 13 obstacles.
  • 3,900-meter route: The course contains 13 obstacles.
 

Steeplechase Routes

  • 3,700-meter route: The course contains 14 obstacles: a hurdle, small open ditch, fence, another hurdle, Talus Breton, water jump, double hurdle, oxer, English-style obstacle, brook, Butte (bank), open ditch, and two final hurdles.
  • 3,900-meter route: The course contains 16 obstacles: a hurdle, oxer, English-style obstacle, brook, Butte (bank), open ditch, another hurdle, Talus Breton, water jump, double hurdle, small open ditch, fence, stone wall, another open ditch, and two final hurdles.
  • 4,500-meter route: The course contains 19 obstacles: a hurdle, Talus Breton, water jump, double hurdle, oxer, English-style obstacle, brook, Butte (bank), open ditch, another hurdle, a second Talus Breton, a second water jump, a second double hurdle, small open ditch, fence, stone wall, another open ditch, and two final hurdles.

Main Grandstand

  • Spectator seating: The main grandstand features traditional Normandy-style architecture and a tile-covered roof. It provides covered seating for approximately 700 spectators overlooking the racecourse.
  • Grand Hall: The Grand Hall des Paris is located within the main grandstand complex and serves as the principal indoor betting hall. The 475-square-meter space has a ceiling height of 5 meters.
  • Betting facilities: The Grand Hall contains staffed betting counters, self-service terminals, and television screens. Mobile betting attendants operate around the racecourse, while the geolocated Smarturf service may be used after registration at a betting counter.
  • Race programs: Programs are distributed at both racecourse entrances, inside the Grand Hall, and in the restaurants.
  • Bar du Grand Hall: Located inside the Grand Hall, the bar serves drinks and a snack menu.
  • Le Panoramique by La Boutique Gourmande: Located within the grandstand area, Le Panoramique provides buffet dining with indoor seating and an outdoor terrace. The restaurant offers a 180-degree panoramic view across the racing surfaces.
  • Event capacity: Outside race meetings, the Grand Hall can accommodate 350 seated guests or 850 standing guests.

Family Facilities

  • Village Hippik’Kids: Located in the center of the racecourse, the children’s area provides outdoor games and scheduled activities during designated meetings and school-holiday periods.
  • Hippo’Garderie: The complimentary supervised childcare facility includes an enclosed outdoor play area. It accepts children without advance reservations and generally operates from one hour before racing until 30 minutes after the final race.
  • Poney Point: Qualified instructors supervise complimentary introductory pony rides. The facility has Shetland ponies, larger ponies, and a carriage. Donkey rides are also offered when scheduled.
  • Seasonal operation: The exact timetable for children’s facilities and activities is published shortly before each race meeting.

Pavilion Grandstand

  • Le Déjeuner sur l’Herbe: This casual dining outlet operates from the Pavilion Grandstand. Customers can use its planted track-view terrace or the picnic tables positioned around the racecourse grounds.
  • Service: Le Déjeuner sur l’Herbe provides informal quick-service dining and operates without reservations.

Parade Ring and Adjacent Facilities

  • Parade Ring: The outdoor Parade Ring is open to racegoers, allowing them to inspect the runners and watch jockeys receive their final riding instructions.
  • La Terrasse by La Boutique Gourmande: Located near the Parade Ring, La Terrasse serves a seasonal, bistro-style menu based on products from Normandy’s land and sea.
  • Restaurant reservations: Reservations are accepted for La Terrasse and Le Panoramique. Restaurant reservations do not include admission to the racecourse.
  • Mumm Champagne Bar: The champagne bar has a terrace beside the Parade Ring.
  • Bar Rond: Adjoining the Mumm Champagne Bar, the Bar Rond serves cold drinks and packaged snacks.

Seasonal Refreshment Areas

  • Le Braséro Français: Included in the 2026 dining program, this seasonal cooking area serves food prepared over a brasero.
  • La Plage des Ammonites: Included in the 2026 program, this seasonal outdoor bar provides views of the racing surface and the horse walkway.
  • Quick-service outlets: Additional seasonal outlets around the grounds serve items such as burgers, paninis, salads, sandwiches, desserts, and drinks.

  • By road: The racecourse is approximately two hours from Paris via the A13. The A29 provides access from other parts of northern France.
  • By rail: Trouville–Deauville station is served by trains from Paris Saint-Lazare. Taxis and regional coaches provide local connections.
  • By air: Deauville–Normandie is the nearest airport. Caen–Carpiquet Airport is approximately 45 minutes away by road.
  • Parking: Public parking is available during race meetings. Separate parking arrangements apply to racing professionals.
  • Accessibility: Admission is complimentary for visitors with reduced mobility. Guide dogs are permitted.
