Newmarket Racecourse
Newmarket Racecourse is a horse-racing track in Suffolk, England, United Kingdom. It opened in 1667, at Newmarket.
History of Newmarket Racecourse
1636 – The racecourse was founded and spearheaded by King Charles II for its enhancement and expansion in Newmarket.
1666 – King Charles II returned to Newmarket.
1667 – The racecourse formally opened.
1671 – King Charles had ridden the victorious horse in the 1671 Newmarket Town Plate.
1720 – The result of the Newmarket Town Plate was recorded in the Newmarket Match Book for the first time.
1809 – 2000 Guineas is inaugurated.
1814 – 1000 Guineas is run for the first time.
1840 – There were seven annual meetings.
1914 – World War I – Official Royal Flying Corps in Newmarket.
1915 – Newmarket continued racing during World War I.
1939 – Rowley Mile became an official RAF Bomber Command Airbase.
1949 – Photo Finish was used for the first time at Newmarket.
1974 – Newmarket Racecourses became part of The Jockey Club.
1974 – Rookery Shopping Centre opened in Newmarket town.
1987 – Newmarket race nights were established.
1999 – The Newmarket program was moved to the July Course while the new Millennium Grandstand at the Rowley Mile was constructed.
2008 – Due to waterlogging at York, several races from the Ebor Festival were staged at the July Course, including three Group 1 races – the Yorkshire Oaks, the Nunthorpe, and the Juddmonte International.
2009 – 200th running of the 2000 Guineas.
2011 – Frankel produces an unforgettable performance to win the QIPCO 2000 Guineas.
2015 – Kylie Minogue played at Newmarket Nights.
2016 – Newmarket Racecourses celebrate their 350th birthday in conjunction with Newmarket Town.

Track Details
- Rowley Mile Course
- It measures 2 miles and 4 furlongs.
- It measures 1 mile and 2 furlongs (2 km) straight with minor undulations towards ‘The Bushes’ and two furlongs (400 m) out.
- The penultimate furlong (200 m) is downhill, and the last is uphill, forming ‘The Dip’.
- Races beyond 1m 2f start on the ‘Cesarewitch’ or ‘Beacon’ course, in which the turns are right-handed into the straight.
- It is for Flat racing only, with a capacity of over 20,000.
- It has grass airstrips for use by light aircraft.
- The July Course
- It measures 2 miles and 1 ½ furlongs.
- It is sometimes called the Summer Course and has a 1 mile (1600 m) straight, known as ‘The Bunbury Mile.’
- There is a long downhill stretch after 2 furlongs (400 m) before the uphill furlong (200 m) to the finish.
- It also uses the ‘Cesarewitch/Beacon’ course for longer distances, again turning right into the straight.
- It is for Flat racing only, with a capacity of over 20,000.
- It has grass airstrips for use by light aircraft.
- The Round Course
- It measures 3m 6f 93y.
- It is used only once a year for the Newmarket Town Plate.
- If races need to be extended on the Rowley Mile Course, the Cesarewitch or the Beacon Course can be implemented.
- Cesarewitch Course
- It is from SP of Two Middle Miles to the End of the Flat.
- It measures 2m 2f 28y.
