Plumpton Racecourse

Plumpton Racecourse is a horse-racing track in East Sussex, United Kingdom. It opened in 1884 at the village of Plumpton.

History

The first meeting was held on February 11, 1884, located at the village of Plumpton, East Sussex, near Lewes and Brighton, BN7 3AL UK. It is one kilometer south of Plumpton Green and is situated opposite the Plumpton Rugby FC and Plumpton railway station.

The foundation and survival of this racecourse are primarily because of the four men, namely, Thomas Henry Case, Isidore Kerman, Peter Savill, and Adrian Pratt. In 1876 Thomas Henry Case founded the venue as the first enclosed hare coursing meeting and subsequently, in 1884, introduced horse racing. Isidore Kerman purchased the course in 1961 and brought about many of the improvements that were needed to ensure the course’s survival. Finally, Peter Savill and Adrian Pratt purchased the course in 1998 again to assure its economic survival and protect it from the developers.

It is one of Britain’s small National Hunt racecourses, yet awarded the Best Small Racecourse in the South 2018. The track is rather hilly, known as a ‘hidden gem’ in the English horseracing scene, and renowned as a ‘nursery ground’ for future stars.

Track Details

The track can accommodate up to 5,000 people. The racetrack is a tightish left-handed circuit of over 1 mile (1.6 km) and an undulating course. The hurdle course is now situated outside the chase course, and both share the same uphill finish. It has four sharp turns around a tight circuit. The steeplechase course contains six fences, including an open ditch. There is an obvious downhill run-in on the back straight, with several gradual climbs and undulations spread out across the remainder of the course.

It offers the Paddock Restaurant and marquee, Private suites, and Director’s Box. Also hosts events such as weddings and car boot sales.
