SunRay Park and Casino
SunRay Park and Casino is a horse-racing track in Sunland Park, New Mexico. It opened in 1984, at 39 Road.
History of SunRay Park & Casino
1984 — San Juan Downs opened in April at the county-owned fairgrounds property now occupied by SunRay Park & Casino.
Early 1990s — San Juan Downs closed after approximately 8 years of operation, and the racetrack remained dark until its redevelopment as SunRay Park.
1997 — The SunRay operation began leasing 92 acres at McGee Park from San Juan County. The leased property included the former San Juan Downs racing site.
1999 — SunRay Gaming of New Mexico secured racing and gaming licenses and invested more than $9 million in redeveloping the former San Juan Downs property. SunRay Park & Casino opened on July 2 with 300 gaming machines and 162 simulcast screens, including 64 screens in betting carrels. The opening facilities included a 1,400-seat grandstand, a 50,000-square-foot open-air exhibit plaza and a 25,000-square-foot apron. Live Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse racing returned later that year.
2019 — The live-racing season was shortened to less than 1 month after previously running from April through late June.
2020 — New Mexico closed its racing and gaming facilities in March during the COVID-19 pandemic, and the entire scheduled SunRay Park meeting was cancelled.
2021 — Live racing returned on April 23 for the first SunRay Park meeting since 2019. The approved program comprised 18 live-racing days.
2025 — The New Mexico Racing Commission approved the transfer of SunRay Park’s primary racing license and simulcast license to Western Gaming LLC, effective March 1. Western Gaming subsequently pursued regulatory approval to relocate the license from Farmington to a proposed racetrack and casino development in Clovis.
2026 — The New Mexico Racing Commission approved the requested relocation to Clovis on February 10. SunRay Park then conducted an 18-day Farmington meeting from April 10 through May 17, and the commission approved another 18 Farmington racing dates for 2027. On August 31, a New Mexico district court vacated the relocation decision after ruling that the commission lacked statutory authority to relocate a racing license.
Track Details
Main Dirt Track
- The main track is an oval dirt course used for Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse flat racing.
- The oval measures approximately 6 furlongs, or 3/4 mile, around.
- The homestretch measures approximately 990 feet from the final turn to the finish line.
- The same dirt surface is used for both Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse racing.
- Official Equibase charts identify the racing surface as dirt and publish the official track condition for each race.
- The track’s Equibase and industry code is SRP.
Other Facilities
Stables and Racing Staff Facilities
- The stable complex includes stalls, tack rooms, hay sheds and walker rings.
- For the 2026 meeting, the official stable rules required sawdust bedding and prohibited straw. Clean material was also required on the walker rings.
- Horses arriving for the 2026 meeting were required to have a health certificate. Thoroughbreds required current Coggins documentation, while Quarter Horses required current negative Coggins and piroplasmosis documentation presented at the stable gate.
Sportz Arena
- Sportz Arena is located beside the casino floor, with sliding glass doors providing a direct view of the racetrack.
- The dining room contains a large projection screen and wall-mounted televisions for sports and racing coverage.
- A full-service bar operates within the restaurant.
- Live music is scheduled every Friday and Saturday night.
- Breakfast is served daily until 1 p.m.
- The published menu includes breakfast plates, appetizers, burgers, sandwiches, salads, New Mexican dishes, steaks, seafood, children’s meals and desserts.
- Representative published menu prices include:
- Breakfast: A 2-egg breakfast is $10, a breakfast burrito is $9 and steak and eggs is $14.
- Appetizers: A chicken-wing basket is $10, Nacho Supreme is $10 and the 3-item appetizer combination is $13.
- Burgers and sandwiches: A build-your-own 1/2-pound burger is $10, specialty burgers are $12 and the slow-roasted prime-rib Philly sandwich is $12.
- Southwestern dishes: The Navajo taco and chimichanga are $13, while the smothered burrito, enchilada plate and taco plate are $12.
- Entrées: Chicken-fried steak is $14, a 10-ounce New York strip steak is $15 and a 12-ounce ribeye is $18.
- Desserts: Cake, pie and New York cheesecake are $6.

- Tuesday through Thursday: 11 a.m.–10 p.m.
- Friday and Saturday: 10 a.m.–1 a.m.

Casino
- The smoke-free casino contains more than 400 slot machines, 30 video-poker games and 5 video-blackjack games.
- SunRay operates a player-rewards program connected to eligible casino play and selected promotions.
- Casino hours are:
- Monday: 10 a.m.–1 a.m.
- Tuesday through Thursday: 10 a.m.–2 a.m.
- Friday and Saturday: 10 a.m.–3 a.m.
- Sunday: 10 a.m.–1 a.m.
Banquet and Event Services
- SunRay Park & Casino has 2 permanent banquet rooms for private celebrations, receptions, weddings, quinceañeras and corporate events.
- Event services include on-site catering, full-service bars, stages and audiovisual equipment.
- Dance-floor arrangements are available according to the room and event configuration.
- Quotes, menus and event-planning information are available through the banquet office.
High Desert Club
- The High Desert Club is the property’s largest banquet room and overlooks the racetrack.
- The room contains a full-service bar, stage, dance floor, in-room sound system and projector.
- The space accommodates large functions such as weddings, quinceañeras and receptions.
StingRay’s Room
- StingRay’s Room provides seating for up to 150 guests.
- The room contains a full-service bar, an in-room sound system and 2 full-wall projection systems.
- Stage and dance-floor configurations are available for private functions.
- StingRay’s also hosts scheduled ticketed entertainment, including stand-up comedy performances.
- Entertainment information and reservations are available through SunRay Park & Casino.

Location and Access to the Racecourse
- It is an American horse racing track straddling both Albany, California, and Berkeley, California, along the shoreline of San Francisco Bay adjacent to the Eastshore Freeway in the San Francisco Bay Area.
- It is bordered by the Albany Bulb, Albany Beach, and Albany Plateau on the North. To the east is Interstate 80, and to the south the Berkeley Meadow.
- It is accessible from Gilman Street, Albany exits of the East shore Freeway, and adjacent city streets.
- Public Transportation
- AC Transit provides a seasonal bus service, line 304, between the track and North Berkeley BART station until 2008.
- East Shore Charter Lines started to provide the racetrack with a new free service from the BART station in 2009.
- Single Stadium Seating or Box Seating
- It costs $15 per person for 18 years old or above.
- The package includes (1) Admission, (1) Club House Box Seating, (1) Daily Race Program, and (1) Self-Parking (if applicable).
- Most boxes’ capacity is up to 8 adults.
- Turf Club Admission
- It costs $20 per person for 18 years old or above.
- It is open in a limited capacity on Saturday, Sunday, and selected Holidays.

- FREE to enter the racetrack but should be accompanied by a paid adult admission.
