The Curragh Racecourse
The Curragh Racecourse is a horse-racing track in Newbridge, County Kildare, Ireland. It opened in 1868, at Curragh plain.
History
A Thoroughbred Flat with the name “Curragh” originated from the Irish language word Cuirreach which is defined as the “place of the running horse”, located on the Curragh plain in County Kildare between the towns of Newbridge and Kildare. The track was officially announced as a horse racing and training facility by parliament in 1868. However, races have already been happening on the track since the 1700s. According to the earliest Irish manuscripts, it became a meeting place of the Celtic Kings where much sporting activity, including horseracing, was held. In 1727, the first recorded place was held on the plain, while the Curragh’s first official racing occurred in 1741. Moreover, the first Derby was held in 1866. The track is also ideal for filming in which the notable movie Braveheart also filmed their multiple battle scenes on the Curragh Plains.
Reconstruction of the grandstand and racecourse facilities commenced in 2017 and finished in 2019, opening the Irish Flat season.
Track Details
The Curragh Plains extend for nearly 5,000 acres (4,870 to be exact). In which 771 acres are the Brownlands, strictly preserved by and for the Irish military. Another part is the 815 -acre chunk of meadowlands that has been assigned as “Ranger and Danger Areas”, the Bluelands. The remaining 3,284 acres are the Greenlands, in which 817 of it is managed by Turf Club, where racing takes place. It has a right-handed track, horseshoe, galloping in nature with a testing uphill finish with a two-mile distance and a one-mile chute. There are 70 miles of turf gallops, approximately 12 miles of peat gallops, and eight all-weather tracks. On the other hand, the training ground is approximately 1,500 acres.
The track also has its distinguished characteristic where it serves lively bars and restaurants that can accommodate 30,000 people, located through the racecourse enclosure. These are the Bollinger Champagne Bar and Bistro, Curragh View and Horseshoe Bars, The Horseshoe Restaurant, and the Horace Pinks and Vintage Crop West End Bars. It also provides various entertainment for children throughout the horse racing afternoons, perfect for family bonding.
