Newbury Racecourse
Newbury Racecourse is a horse racing track in Newbury, United Kingdom.
It opened in 1905, at the Racecourse Rd.
History of Newbury Racecourse
1805 to 1815 – Although the Racecourse on its current site wasn’t established until 1905, the first recorded horse racing in Newbury took place in 1805 with ‘Newbury Races’, an annual two-day race meeting at Enborne Heath. The meeting was transferred to Woodhay Heath in 1811 until 1815.
1895 – After 90 years, Kingsclere trainer John Porter proposed a new racecourse at Newbury. However, the Jockey’s Club rejected several of his plans and delayed the construction. It was just fortunate that Porter had a chance to meet King Edward VII. Hence, it was eventually approved with the support of King Edward VII.
1904 – The Newbury Racecourse Company was founded. They purchased the land and constructed the buildings (including the Hampshire Stand) and stables on the current site in April 1904.
1905 – The Newbury Racecourse and the Newbury Racecourse railway station opened on September 26, 1905. The first race meeting was held on 26 and 27 at its current location. Copper King, ridden by Charles Trigg and trained by Charles Marnes, won the first-ever race: the Whatcombe Handicap.
1906 – National Hunt racing followed flat racing by one year and started in 1906. Nine days of racing were planned – six on the Flat and three over Jumps.
1910 – The racecourse moved to its current location in the Greenham area on the southeast side of Newbury.
1914 to 1918 – During the First World War, the track was utilized as a prisoner-of-war camp for German captives.
1916 to 1919 – The course closed between 1916 and 1918 when used as an inspection depot by the War Office. It only reopened in 1919.
1940 to 1945 – The War prevented the substitute Derby, which was planned for Newbury in 1940. Afterward, the racecourse closed between 1941 and 1945 and was left close to ruins after the Second World War when utilized by the Americans as a marshaling yard – twenty-two miles of sidings had left their mark.
1949 – Geoffrey Freer became Clerk of the Course, and the racing also resumed on All Fools Day in 1949.
1990 – A regular stopping service was introduced for the station after establishing new facilities at the racecourse and constructing a new industrial estate on Hambridge Road. The station initially had four platforms.
1992 – Queen Elizabeth opened the Berkshire Stand.
2000 – The impressive 3-tiered Grandstand was built, which was designed by a British architect, Sir Norman Foster. It became the home to the largest indoor space at Newbury Racecourse.
2006 – One of the first concerts was held at the Racecourse by Welsh reggae-metal band Skindred.
2008 – Newbury Racecourse started to host between 1 and 3 concerts each year, primarily supporting horse racing meets. The concerts have included three appearances by Madness, Tom Jones, Simply Red, and Olly Murs.
2010 – Redevelopment of the racecourse started with new facilities financed by the sale of land for housing, apartments, a children’s nursery, a hotel, and a gym.
2011 – Two horses (Marching Song and Fenix Two) collapsed and died in the Paddock while parading for the first race of the day on February 12, 2011. Another two horses (Kid Cassidy and The Merry Giant) appeared to have been affected. The novice hurdle race went ahead, starting about 20 minutes late, but the rest of the day’s racing was abandoned. The initial investigation results into the incident were released on February 17. The Director of Equine Science and Welfare for the British Horseracing Authority – Professor Tim Morris, reported leakage from an electrical cable under the parade ring.
2012 – Queen Elizabeth II celebrated her 86th birthday in the Newbury Racecourse. The company also completed a Joint Venture agreement with David Wilson Homes to establish a significant redevelopment of the racecourse and housing development of 1,500 homes.
2015 – The Newbury Racecourse opened the Lodge Hotel.
2020 – The racetrack experienced a 68% loss of turnover for the first six months of 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic in September 2020.
2021 – A COVID-19 vaccination center was established at Newbury Racecourse in January 2021. In the same year, Olly Murs performed the first concert at Newbury Racecourse following the COVID-19 pandemic on August 14, with an audience of 17,000.
2023 – Murs returned to perform at Newbury Racecourse in August 2023, his third appearance at the venue. He performed with a leg brace following a severe knee injury.
Dual Purpose Track
It is acknowledged by several as the best dual-purpose racecourse in the UK and the second-largest center for training racehorses after Newmarket. It is known for its proximity to the Lambourn training center, which caused it to be home to locally-grown talent and attracted horses from further areas.
Track Details
Main Flat Track
- It is a left-handed and oval track., positioned outside the Jump Track.
- It measures approximately 1 mile and 7 furlongs with 4 ½ furlongs run-in.
- It has a straight mile with minor undulations. All races from 5-7 furlongs are run on the straight course.
- The races on a round mile and over 7 furlongs 60 yards start on the chute.
- It is generally considered fair and galloping, with a long, wide home straight.
- The ground can also become challenging during the rainy season as it causes a disadvantage to those racing down the center.
Jump Track
- It is an oval course located inside the Flat round course.
- It is known for its stiff fences and galloping nature.
- The course is left-handed with a circumference of 1 mile and 4 furlongs or 1 ¾ mile.
- The Jumps course features eleven fences or seven hurdles per circuit, with a run-in of over a furlong.
- Four stiff fences make up the home straight.
- The water jump is positioned in front of the grandstand and the final circuit.

The Lodge
- The racecourse also offers a hotel open all year round.
- It is located on the Western end.
- All of the luxury rooms are equipped with king-sized beds and breakfast.
Golf Course
- Guests can also enjoy golf as Newbury has an 18-hole golf course within the racecourse.
Railway Station
- The Great Western Railway opened the station on September 26, 1905. It was used for particular races only. Now, it is also utilized for non-race days as well by local services operated by Great Western Railway between Reading and Newbury and Bedwyn. It serves the East Fields area of Newbury, Berkshire, England, and the adjacent Newbury Racecourse.
- The station now has three platforms. The two lines are the main lines, and the third platform is on the southern side of the station on a loop. The loop that previously served the fourth platform has now been lifted.
- The two main platforms currently served by stopping services have been shortened by fencing off the unused parts of the platform. Only short Class 166 DMUs and Class 165 DMUs use these platforms. A footbridge links all the existing platforms.
- It is 52 miles 31 chains (52.39 miles, 84.31 km) measured from London Paddington.
- It handles heavy traffic and additional trains on race days.

Grandstand
- It has a capacity of 1000 seats.
- It is designed by world-renowned British architect Sir Norman Foster.

- Ground Floor
- The ground floor with vehicle access doors is suitable for car launches and large exhibitions.
- The max capacity is 1000 theatre style and 650 cabaret.
- The total space is 1,000sqm of hard-standing concrete space
- First Floor
- The racetrack is accessible from 1st floor and outside lawn area
- Second Floor
- The max capacity is 600 theatre style and 500 cabarets.
- It provides visitors with an overview of the racecourse from five large terraces.
Berkshire Stand
- It is suitable for exhibitions, training events, and smaller conferences.

- From the Royal Box to the Syndicate Rooms, it offers easy access to four floors of multi-use space.
- Ground Floor
- The max capacity is 120 with theatre style.

- The new conference room, “Fred Winter,” was launched in 2019.
Hampshire Stand
- It is the oldest and most iconic building, but it was recently refurbished to have modernized facilities.

- The max capacity on the second floor is 300 with theatre style and 220 cabarets.
- The ‘Members Club’ is ideal for receptions, networking, and smaller meetings—a maximum capacity of 100 receptions.

Owners Club

Location and Access to the Racecourse
- It is located in the civil parish of Greenham, adjacent to Newbury in Berkshire, England.
- It is situated in the center of the South of England and is easily accessible from Junctions 12 and 13 of the M4 and from the M3 and A34. It is approximately 60 miles west of central London.
- Newbury Station has direct trains from London Paddington on significant race days. There is a short walk (1-2 minutes) to the racecourse after arriving using the Newbury Station.
- Parking
- It has car parking for 3,700 cars
- Premier Enclosure ticket holders can park inside the course in Car Park 1.
- Grandstand ticket holders can park outside in Car Park 5.
- All parking at Newbury is free of charge.
