Newcastle Racecourse (Australia)
Newcastle Racecourse is a horse-racing track in New South Wales, Australia. It opened in April 27, 1907, at Darling Street Broadmeadow.
History of Newcastle Racecourse (Australia)
1907 – Newcastle Racecourse opened at Broadmeadow on April 27, 1907, replacing the Newcastle Jockey Club’s former racecourse at Hamilton, where the club had previously conducted racing for more than 40 years. The land for the Broadmeadow racecourse was acquired from the Australian Agricultural Company. Historical reporting described the new site as being about three miles from the Newcastle post office, near the suburbs of Hamilton and Adamstown. Before drainage and track works were completed, the Broadmeadow site was described as swampy ground. The original racecourse was reported as one and a quarter miles in circumference with a 30-foot-wide racing track, and early facilities included an official stand, jockeys’ and weighing rooms, a grandstand, refreshment and dining saloons, lawns, enclosures, and horse boxes. The opening meeting included the Newcastle Cup, which was won by Anatroff.
2017 – Official track records for the Newcastle Course Proper were reset on February 7, 2017.
2019 – The Hunter was first run at Newcastle Racecourse.
2024 – The Hunter attained Group 2 status.
