Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races
Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races is a Racino (horse-racing track and Casino) in Charles Town, West Virginia, United States. It opened in 1933, at Hollywood Drive.
History of Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races
1933 – Before Charles Town, it was Jefferson County Races, opened on December 3, 1933, originally owned by Albert and Joseph Boyle, located in West Virginia, USA. It was the first track in West Virginia to operate when the state legalized racing and parimutuel betting.
1964 – Baltimore’s Pimlico Race Course owners purchased the track. Under their management, they first installed lights for night racing.
1972 – It was again sold to Shenandoah Corporation, who also managed the Shenandoah Downs, the only competitor of Charles Town.
1975 – The year-round racing in Shenandoah Downs was moved to Charles Town when it was closed. However, Shenandoah Downs is still utilized as a training track.
1979 – Sunday racing was introduced.
1996 – West Virginia voters agreed to place video lottery machines at the state’s tracks.
1997 – Penn National Gaming Inc. purchased the racetrack and enhanced the racetrack by adding simulcast racing, several dining options, and 3,500 slot machines.
2010 – They added table games and an event center for live concerts and shows. On July 2, 2010, the facility was renamed from “Charles Town Races & Slots” to “Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races”. The owner of this track is the Gaming and Leisure Properties, and the Operating license holder is Penn National Gaming.
2018 – Sports betting was introduced at Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races on August 30, 2018, which became the first casino in West Virginia to feature sports betting.
