Mountaineer Casino, Racetrack and Resort

Mountaineer Casino, Racetrack, and Resort is a horse-racing track in New Cumberland, West Virginia, United States. It opened in 1951, at Mountaineer Cir.

History of Mountaineer Casino, Racetrack and Resort

1937 The racetrack’s parent company was incorporated. Its former name was Waterford Downs which originated from Al Boyle’s family ancestral home of Waterford, Ireland, also the president of the Charles Town Races.

1939 – The first public offering was authorized in February 1939, expecting to start operating in September.

1940 – However, the building had not begun on August 1940 and only purchased 250 acres.

1942 – The grandstand construction was also delayed until 1943 due to a shortage of steel caused by World War II.

1948 – Development of the facilities only commenced on July 1948.

1950 – The racetrack’s name changed to Waterford Park.

1951 – The racetrack was finally inaugurated on May 19, 1951.

Mid 1950’s – James F. Edwards purchased the racetrack.

1987 – Bill Blair purchased the track and renamed it, Mountaineer Park.

1992 – Bill Blair sold the track to California-based Excalibur Holding Corporation. After two years, the track installed slot machines (making it the first racino in the US). Excalibur was renamed Winners Entertainment, then renamed MTR Gaming Group.

1994 – The racetrack established slot machines and became the first racino in the United States.

2007Mountaineer added 50 casino table games on December 20, including blackjack, three-card poker, and roulette.

2019 – Eldorado Resorts, which merged with MTR Gaming in 2014, sold Mountaineer and two other properties to Century Casinos and Vici Properties in 2019 (owners until today).
