We’ve got Florida-breds at Gulfstream Park and Cal-breds at Santa Anita Park on tap Saturday, and if you’re going to do any damage, you might as well try to do it on both coasts. Let’s dig in.

Sunshine Turf – Gulfstream Park

This race looks like it’s begging for a closer. The issue? None of them are world-beaters. But the field itself isn’t exactly daunting, so I’m willing to take a swing with a horse who should be completely removed from any pace shenanigans.
Classic of Course has only three grass starts and was good enough to win one of them. He can finish, and importantly, he doesn’t need to be hopelessly far back to do it. The presence of Junior Alvarado seals it for me—he’s a strong, patient finisher who knows how to time a run. If this gelding gets the trip I think he will, he could be the right kind in a race that doesn’t demand brilliance.

Sunshine Sprint – Gulfstream Park

I’m not reinventing the wheel here. Damon’s Mound looks very tough, even at a short price. Sometimes the right move is knowing when not to get cute. I won’t try to beat him.

Cal Cup Oaks – Santa Anita

Out west, this is where things get interesting. There’s pace here, and there are plenty of question marks—especially with a fair share of first-time turfers. That’s usually where value hides.
Tiger Lady fits that bill. She should be a nice price, and I love her grass pedigree top and bottom. This is a wide-open race in my view, and she has every right to pull off the upset if things shake out the way I expect.

Cal Cup Derby – Santa Anita

My Boy Stan is an intriguing shipper. I’m not convinced he’s quite this good, but if I’m wrong, it wouldn’t shock me. Ocean Bear makes sense on paper, but I keep coming back to route experience.
That’s why I’ll land on Can’t Help Myself. In races like this, proven stamina matters, and I think it tips the scales just enough.

No heroics—just taking shots where the races allow it. If we can pick our spots right, there’s no reason we can’t cash on both sides of the country. We’ve done it before! We’ll do it again!
